Welsh politics is facing another political rollercoaster following the resignation of Dan Thomas. On September 15, 2026, Dan stepped down as the leader of Reform UK in Wales.
He stepped down as the leader of Reform UK in Wales after being arrested on Sunday, September 13, on suspicion of assault and engaging in controlling or coercive behaviour. Welsh Police confirmed that the arrest took place in the Aberbargoed area and that he was released on bail pending further inquiries. Meanwhile, the political leader said that he was stepping down for “personal reasons.”
He stated that the police had given him a clean chit and that he had reported himself to the police. He repeatedly claimed that he had not made any mistake. He said it was just a tactic to distract attention from Reform’s work in the Senedd. He will continue to be a Member of the Senedd for Casnewydd Islwyn and support his successor.
He was appointed Reform UK’s Wales leader in February 2026 by Nigel Farage. He became the opposition leader after the defeat in the May 2026 elections. However, they gained a huge number of seats and became the biggest opposition group with 34 members. Helem Jenner, the deputy leader, became interim leader until a new leader is appointed. Right now, Reform’s Senedd group is due to start the process of selecting a permanent replacement.
