Wales is ready for a massive campaign against suicide. But this time, the shield is sport. Prince William is set to officially launch a campaign with England Football Captain Harry Kane, Kelly Holmes, and Alan Shearer.
This aims to help adults seeking support for suicide to turn to sports, especially football. Prince William is officially monitoring the situation and progress. For the campaign content, multiple regional figures will be included from Wales and the United Kingdom.
Right now, Wales is facing a critical situation following suicides. According to the Public Health Department, 350 people committed suicide, which is 12.4 per 100,000 people. The number is higher than in England, where ONS data shows the number is 11.2 per 100,000, while in Wales it is 14 per 100,000.
By gender, the rate is much worse than in 1981. In 2024, the number reached a record 337 suicides reported among Welsh men. Males made up 77% of reported suicide cases. For those under 50, this is the biggest factor in the deaths of Welsh men. In females, the number is 6.8 per 100,000.
The region of North Wales is the most affected in 2025, with 108 cases, while in 2022 it was 49. Some reports note that BCUHB is the most affected, with the highest numbers.
How will sports contradict suicide? According to multiple research studies, it has been proven that sports boost mental health. A human being will have social connectivity, self-esteem, and identity. There are multiple options that will help humans to distract themselves.
This is a massive and very important announcement from Prince William. The collaborative campaign with athletes will bring positive energy to the project.
