Putting Cardiff on the Map: Inside DIFF Radio

DIFF Radio is an independent music platform based in Cardiff, founded by Matt Cutrupi in May 2025 to support underground and electronic music artists. Cutrupi describes the project as a way to “become a pipeline” for emerging talent, helping artists showcase their work and reach audiences beyond Cardiff. On 30 September 2026, DIFF Radio expanded with the launch of Heart of Cardiff, its first long-form podcast series. Featuring interviews with underground and electronic artists from across Wales and the wider UK, the series explores the people behind the music and offers insight into their creative journeys.

Building a platform for Cardiff’s music scene

Cutrupi founded DIFF Radio in response to what he saw as a lack of support for underground and electronic artists in Cardiff. As he explained,

“there is not enough infrastructure to support underground and electronic artists in Cardiff”.

Despite the talent and passion within Cardiff’s music scene, Cutrupi felt there was a disconnect between artists and the opportunities available to them. A shortage of venues and events, alongside a lack of cohesion within the city’s creative community, meant musicians could struggle to find the connections and platforms needed to showcase their work. For emerging artists, having the talent to create music is only one part of developing a career; finding an audience and establishing relationships within the industry can be just as important.

For Cutrupi, Cardiff presented an opportunity to help bridge this gap. Rather than seeing the city’s underground music scene as lacking potential, he recognised the creative energy already there. He believed the challenge was bringing people and opportunities together, allowing artists to connect with one another and find ways to share their work more widely.

DIFF Radio grew from this ambition. By creating a platform dedicated to underground and electronic music, Cutrupi hopes to contribute to a more connected creative scene in which artists can support one another and find opportunities to develop their careers. The project is rooted in Cardiff, but its ambitions extend beyond the city, with the aim of helping local talent reach a wider audience.

Bringing artists and their stories together

Beyond its wider ambitions, DIFF Radio works to support underground and electronic artists by providing opportunities to share their music and tell their stories. Its work is not solely about the music itself, but also about the people creating it, their experiences and the paths they are taking within the industry.

This approach has developed further with the launch of Heart of Cardiff, DIFF Radio’s long-form podcast series. Featuring interviews with underground and electronic artists from across Wales and the wider UK, the series gives musicians space to discuss their creative journeys, careers and experiences. For listeners, it offers a closer insight into the people behind the music, while giving participating artists an opportunity to introduce themselves and their work to new audiences.

When Cutrupi spoke about the project on 28 September 2026, just two days before the series launched, he had already interviewed 14 people. He was surprised by the level of interest, with so many keen to get involved before the first episode had even been released. This early response suggested that there was an appetite for a project dedicated to bringing underground artists together and giving them a space to share their experiences.

The interviews also involve artists coming to Cardiff for the day, creating opportunities for face-to-face conversations and relationship-building. These interactions reflect another aspect of DIFF Radio’s ambitions: strengthening connections within the creative community, rather than simply providing a platform for individual musicians. By bringing people together through a shared interest in underground and electronic music, the project hopes to help foster relationships that can continue beyond the interviews themselves.

Putting Cardiff on the map

For Cutrupi, DIFF Radio is about more than providing a platform for individual artists; it is also about ensuring Cardiff’s music scene receives wider recognition. One of his key aims is to “put Cardiff on the map” and “make sure our talent is in the national conversation”.

Although the city is home to artists with considerable talent and ambition, Cutrupi wants to help ensure their work reaches audiences beyond Cardiff. He hopes DIFF Radio can bring greater attention to the music being made locally and help establish the city as a place where underground and electronic artists can develop their careers.

Representing this talent is also one of the most rewarding aspects of the project for Cutrupi. DIFF Radio gives him the opportunity to champion artists and highlight the creativity taking place in Cardiff, helping to build recognition for a scene he believes deserves a wider audience. Rather than allowing the city’s underground music scene to remain disconnected from wider opportunities, he wants to help bring its artists into a broader conversation about contemporary music.

At the heart of this ambition is a desire to ensure that emerging musicians feel supported and that their work is given the chance to be heard. For Cutrupi, raising Cardiff’s profile and supporting its artists go hand in hand: a more visible music scene can help its musicians reach new audiences, while stronger connections between artists can contribute to a more cohesive creative community.

Looking ahead

Looking ahead, Cutrupi hopes to establish DIFF Radio as a recognised voice for Cardiff’s underground and electronic music scene, both nationally and within the city itself. His ambition is for it to become the go-to platform for artists looking to develop their careers, offering opportunities to showcase their work, make connections and take their next steps within the industry.

Ultimately, Cutrupi hopes DIFF Radio will help establish Cardiff as a recognised force within the national underground music scene, creating lasting opportunities for emerging artists to develop their careers, reach wider audiences and gain the recognition their work deserves. Through the continued growth of the project, he wants to ensure that the talent already thriving in Cardiff is not only celebrated locally, but becomes an integral part of the wider national music conversation.
