Key Points

  • Targeting of a Child: The Cardiff Crown Court case revealed that members of the criminal organisation targeted a young child for retaliation purposes after a drug conflict had occurred.
  • Wrong Property Targeted: Shots have been fired at the residence in Pyle, Bridgend, on 22 September 2025; however, the property has nothing in common with the desired victim.
  • Reasons Behind the Shooting: The attack has been made for retaliation against Daniel O’Callaghan accused of dealing in MDMA on Guernsey and of being behind the disappearance of thousands of pounds worth of Class A drugs.
  • Mobile Evidence Proving Guilt: The police found a photograph of the child stored in the mobile phone of one of the defendants together with the text messages that contained information about terrorising the child.
  • Charges Against the Defendants: The defendants are charged with the following crimes: possession of a firearm with intent to endanger the life of a person, conspiracy to cause grievous bodily harm with intent, and conspiracy to supply Class A drugs.

Cardiff (Cardiff Daily) 15 October 2026 – Two members of a major organised crime gang who fired gunshots into the wrong house in Pyle, Bridgend, were actually targeting a young child as part of a drug-related revenge plot, Cardiff Crown Court has heard. The shooting, which occurred on 22 September 2025, was carried out in retaliation against an alleged Guernsey drug dealer suspected of taking thousands of pounds worth of Class A drugs. Defendants face serious firearms, conspiracy, and drug supply charges as the trial continues.

What Evidence Was Presented in Court Regarding the Attack on the Wrong House?

As reported by Colette Hume of BBC Wales, prosecutor Andrew Jones KC outlined the details of the incident to the jury at Cardiff Crown Court. The prosecution presented evidence showing that the shooting carried out in Pyle, Bridgend, on 22 September 2025 was intended as retribution against Daniel O’Callaghan. O’Callaghan was allegedly involved in dealing MDMA on Guernsey and was believed by gang members to be responsible for the disappearance of thousands of pounds worth of Class A drugs hidden on the Channel Island.

However, the discharge of the firearm resulted in bullets hitting an innocent household. As reported by Colette Hume of BBC Wales, two bullets were subsequently recovered by investigators from the front door and an interior wall of the property, which had no connection whatsoever to O’Callaghan or the ongoing drug dispute.

How Were the Gang Members Planning to Target the Young Child?

According to court reports by Colette Hume of BBC Wales, police officers discovered a photograph of a young child stored on a mobile phone belonging to one of the men on trial. The prosecution asserted that this image was kept specifically to identify the target for the planned attack.

As reported by Colette Hume of BBC Wales, prosecutor Andrew Jones KC stated: “It is an image that was stored no doubt in order to ensure the men tasked with enforcing the retribution got the right person.”

Text message exchanges recovered between Kian Darkes, 21, and Kyle Long, 40, both from Bridgend, further detailed the planned retribution. In one message, Darkes stated that he was going to “terrorise” the “kid”. Long replied to the message with “Lmao”, an abbreviation commonly used in text messages to signify laughter.

Addressing Long’s reaction, Andrew Jones KC stated:

“Kyle Long thought it was funny. There’s not much to laugh about is there? It’s about as serious as it gets. These are not idle threats being bandied around by these drug dealers.”

As reported by Colette Hume of BBC Wales, Jones added that further messages demonstrated the men were “intent on teaching O’Callaghan a lesson”. Three hours prior to the shooting, gang members carried out a reconnaissance trip along the route to the targeted property.

Who Are the Defendants and What Charges Do They Face?

As reported by Colette Hume of BBC Wales, several individuals associated with the Bridgend and Cardiff areas are facing charges in connection with the incident and wider gang activities:

  • Kian Darkes (21, from Bridgend): Admitted to possessing a firearm and ammunition in a public place. He denies a further charge of possessing a firearm with intent to endanger life.
  • Daniel Clarke (21, from the Bridgend area): Admitted to possessing a firearm and ammunition in a public place. He denies possessing a firearm with intent to endanger life.
  • Kyle Long (40, from Bridgend): Denies conspiracy to commit grievous bodily harm with intent.
  • Callum Pearson (24, from Cardiff): Denies conspiracy to commit grievous bodily harm with intent.
  • Jade Evans (40, from Bridgend): Denies three counts of conspiracy to supply a Class A drug.

Background of the Development

Organised crime groups (OCGs) operating across the United Kingdom frequently utilise cross-border supply lines, commonly linked to “county lines” networks or offshore drug distribution channels such as those in the Channel Islands. The court heard that the initial dispute originated from the alleged dealing of MDMA—a Class A controlled substance—on Guernsey, where drugs had been concealed.

When large quantities of Class A drugs go missing within illicit distribution networks, gang enforcers often resort to intimidation, severe violence, or firearms to recover financial losses or enforce discipline among associates. The discharge of firearms in residential neighbourhoods in South Wales highlights the risk posed to the general public when enforcers target incorrect addresses during retaliatory operations.

How This Development May Affect the Local Community and Criminal Justice System

  • Increased Police Operations and Surveillance: Following evidence that firearm violence directly impacted an innocent household in Pyle, South Wales Police and regional organised crime units are likely to increase targeted surveillance and firearm interdiction operations against active OCGs in Bridgend and Cardiff.
  • Enhanced Protection for Vulnerable Individuals and Minors: The exposure of explicit threats against a young child in court proceedings may prompt local safeguarding agencies and social services to strengthen risk assessments regarding children connected to individuals involved in high-risk drug trafficking networks.
  • Public Reassurance and Community Safety Measures: Residents in the Bridgend and Pyle areas may demand heightened police visibility and stronger community safety interventions to address the spillover of violent gang activity into civilian residential streets.
