What Led to the Fatal Collision Outside the Club?

The incident unfolded shortly after midnight on 27 September 2025 outside the 4th Glamorgan Homeguard Club in Caerau, Cardiff. As reported by BBC News, Kian Bateman, then 18, accelerated his Seat Ibiza towards Shelley Davies, 38, and David Bratcher, 40, following an altercation between Bratcher and Bateman’s brother, Kai. Prosecutor Michael Jones KC told Cardiff Crown Court that Bateman drove

“with the intention of either killing them or at the very least inflicting severe harm”.

CCTV footage played in court captured Bateman inhaling nitrous oxide from balloons just minutes before entering his vehicle, as detailed by WalesOnline reporter Conor Gogarty.

The car was later found abandoned with nitrous oxide canisters on the passenger seat. Bateman did not stop to help after the collision and fled the scene, returning home with his brother.

How Did the Court Hear the Sequence of Events?

Cardiff Crown Court heard that Davies and Bratcher had attended a music event featuring ragga artist and DJ General Levy at the club .

An altercation involving Bratcher and Kai Bateman preceded the crash, with Bateman sitting in his running car observing. As per BBC coverage, Bateman’s aunt Louise was also hit by the vehicle.

The jury viewed multiple CCTV recordings from the club and a nearby newsagent, showing the vehicle striking the victims. Bateman, from Heol Muston in Ely, pleaded not guilty to murder at the trial’s start on 20 April 2026, having admitted causing death by dangerous driving earlier. The three-week trial concluded with unanimous guilty verdicts on murder and grievous bodily harm.

What Injuries Did Shelley Davies Sustain?

Shelley Davies suffered catastrophic injuries including broken vertebrae, ribs, an arm, pelvis, and hip, plus multiple wounds and abrasions.

WalesOnline reported she developed complications, multiple infections, septic shock, and irreversible multiple organ failure, leading to her death three weeks later on around 18 October 2025. An inquest confirmed multiple organ failure as the cause.

David Bratcher also sustained serious injuries but survived. As covered by the Mirror, Davies was a mother of three.

What Was the Jury’s Verdict and Bateman’s Reaction?

On 1 May 2026, the jury convicted 19-year-old Kian Bateman of murdering Shelley Davies after deliberating. He was acquitted of attempted murder of David Bratcher but found guilty of intentionally causing him grievous bodily harm. Gasps filled the public gallery as verdicts were read, per BBC News.

As led from the dock, Bateman shouted repeatedly,

“I didn’t see Shelley, I didn’t see her, I didn’t see her,”

though prosecutor Michael Jones KC stated Bateman had seen her. Judge Mrs Justice Stacey remanded him in custody; sentencing is set for 3 July 2026.

Why Did Bateman Inhale Laughing Gas Before Driving?

Prosecution evidence included CCTV of Bateman using laughing gas balloons shortly before the crash, as reported by WalesOnline. Nitrous oxide canisters were discovered in the Seat Ibiza Sport, which he drove despite the impairment risk. This detail emerged during the trial starting 20 April 2026.

Background of the Incident

The 4th Glamorgan Homeguard Club in Caerau, Cardiff, hosted a music event by General Levy on 27 September 2025, drawing attendees like Shelley Davies and David Bratcher . Caerau is a residential area in west Cardiff, known for community venues like the club. Prior police investigations noted a separate assault arrest related to events before the crash, but it was distinct.

Bateman, 18 at the time, lived nearby in Ely with his brother Kai. An initial inquest into Davies’ death was opened and adjourned in November 2025, pending criminal proceedings. The trial followed pre-trial hearings, including Bateman’s February 2026 guilty plea to dangerous driving.

Prediction: How This Development Can Affect the Local Cardiff Community

This conviction may lead the local Cardiff community, particularly residents of Caerau and Ely, to heightened awareness of risks from recreational drug use like nitrous oxide while driving. Families in these areas could see increased caution around nightlife venues such as the 4th Glamorgan Homeguard Club, prompting calls for better security or substance checks. Road safety campaigns might intensify, influencing young drivers to avoid impairment, while victims’ families and witnesses may experience ongoing emotional impacts from the publicity.
