Key Points:

  • Record-Breaking Scale: A record 130 runners representing over 30 Cardiff bars, restaurants, hotels, pubs, and leisure venues will participate in the CDF 10K on Sunday, 6 September 2026.
  • Charity Impact: The team aims to raise £10,000 for local children’s charity Dreams & Wishes, following initial targets of over £6,000 raised in year one and £10,000 in year two.
  • Rapid Expansion: Founded in 2024 by Lab 22 owner Tani Hasa with 30 initial tickets, the initiative grew to 62 runners in its inaugural year, expanded to 100 in 2025, and now stands at 130.
  • Cultural Shift: The challenge provides a tailored fitness outlet suited to irregular night-shift working hours, fostering wellbeing, regular exercise, and industry cross-collaboration over late-night social drinking.
  • Future Ambitions: Organisers plan to expand the concept into other cities, including London during CLASS Week.

Cardiff (Cardiff Daily) August 21, 2026 — A grassroots fitness initiative established specifically for Cardiff’s hospitality industry is returning this September for its largest iteration to date, gathering 130 workers from across the capital’s bars, venues, and restaurants.

The Lab 22 Hospitality vs 10K Challenge will see representatives from more than 30 local hospitality businesses compete in the annual CDF 10K on Sunday, 6 September 2026. Organisers confirm that participants are running to generate vital funds for Dreams & Wishes, a local charity dedicated to fulfilling the wishes of seriously ill children and supporting their families.

As reported by Hamish Smith of Class Magazine, the initiative was launched in 2024 by Lab 22 owner Tani Hasa after he initially purchased 30 entry tickets to encourage industry peers to enter a long-distance running event. Those initial places were claimed rapidly, prompting Hasa to procure 30 more. Ultimately, 62 runners competed in the inaugural race, raising £6,000 for charity. By 2025, participation expanded to 100 runners, with the group winning the Scimitar Business Challenge at the event and raising over £9,000.

For 2026, 130 runners have signed up. The participants encompass workers across independent cocktail bars, pubs, fine dining restaurants, hotels, and leisure venues across Cardiff. Beyond entry, Lab 22 funds full race access for participants, alongside custom lanyards and personalized running kit.

How Is the Initiative Changing Cardiff’s Hospitality Culture?

As reported by Wales 247, organisers stress that the initiative’s primary achievement extends far beyond ticket numbers, transforming day-to-day lifestyle patterns between races. Individuals who had not engaged in regular cardio prior to the 2024 launch have developed into active runners, building cross-venue friendships across Cardiff’s night-time economy.

As reported by Hamish Smith of Class Magazine, Lab 22 owner Tani Hasa stated:

“The first year was about convincing people who would never normally sign up for a 10K that they could do it. Three years later, some of those people are proper runners. They’re signing up for other races, running together and telling us what a difference it has made to their mental health.”

Hasa added:

“Hospitality can become a cycle of working, drinking and sleeping if you’re not careful. This has given people something completely different to connect over, and we’ve seen friendships and communities develop between people who might never otherwise have met.”

As reported by Wales 247, Hasa further noted:

“Run clubs are everywhere now, which is brilliant, but if you work evenings, weekends and irregular shifts in hospitality, a lot of those things just aren’t designed around your schedule.”

How Are Charities and Industry Supporters Responding?

As reported by the Cardiff 10K official release, Tony Curtis MBE, Founder and Executive Chairman of Dreams and Wishes Charity, highlighted the impact of the fundraising efforts.

Curtis stated:

“We are incredibly grateful to the ‘Hospitality vs 10K’ team and Lab 22 for their dedication and generosity. The funds raised will make a significant difference in the lives of the seriously ill children and families we support, helping us to create unforgettable precious memories during some of the most challenging times in their lives.”

Curtis added:

“Seeing the hospitality community come together in this way is truly heart-warming, and we can’t thank them enough for their support.”

Building upon its Cardiff foundation, organisers confirm that Lab 22 intends to export the concept to additional cities. Future targets include launching a challenge during London’s CLASS Week to establish similar wellbeing networks across UK-wide hospitality sectors.

Background of the Development

Cardiff’s hospitality sector, like much of the UK’s service industry, traditionally operates under unsociable hours, demanding late shifts, and physical fatigue. Social interaction among bar, venue, and restaurant staff historically centred around post-shift drinks and night-time venues, frequently compounding mental health strains and physical burnout.

When award-winning cocktail venue Lab 22 created the ‘Hospitality vs 10K Challenge’ in 2024, it targeted this systemic gap by establishing an accessible, structured avenue for fitness. By providing fully funded entry, custom gear, and inclusive community training blocks scheduled around late shifts, the initiative systematically lowered barriers to organized sport. The growth from 62 participants in 2024 to 130 in 2026 demonstrates an increasing demand for healthy, non-alcohol-centric social outlets within the UK service trade.

Prediction: How This Development Can Affect Cardiff’s Hospitality Sector

  • Reduced Industry Burnout: Providing structured athletic engagement specifically timed around shift patterns is likely to improve mental health resilience, lowering stress levels and reducing staff turnover across participating venues.
  • Cross-Venue Collaboration: Breaking down competitive silos between local venues through shared training fosters a more supportive regional industry network, benefiting recruitment and professional knowledge sharing.
  • National Blueprint: Should the model expand successfully to major hubs like London, it could standardise wellness-focused initiatives across the broader UK service industry, influencing corporate social responsibility (CSR) practices in hospitality management.
