Key Points

  • Alexander Blue, a 41-year-old businessman and part-owner of The Taxi Centre in Glasgow, was found severely beaten and stabbed in the driveway of his luxury home on Dundonald Road, Dowanhill, in Glasgow’s upmarket West End, just after midnight on 25 June 2002.
  • He was discovered unconscious in a pool of his own blood by a neighbour at around 12:20am and died two days later on 27 June 2002 in Southern General Hospital from massive head injuries; his head injuries were so severe his mother Kathy did not recognise him initially.
  • Blue was last seen leaving the Bean Scene cafe (also referred to as Beanscene) in Byres Road or Cresswell Lane around 7-8pm on 24 June 2002, sipping a cappuccino alone; he parked his silver Porsche outside his Georgian-style ground-floor flat shortly after.
  • A reported sighting placed him with three men at 10pm in Ashton Lane; a man was heard speaking to him outside his home at 11:30pm, and another man was heard leaving the house around the same time.
  • Two men were seen in a black BMW near his home at about 10:45pm on 24 June; a neighbour reported hearing at least two men arguing inside his flat that evening.
  • Blue was carrying a briefcase reportedly containing £30,000, which has never been found; he had been made bankrupt in 1999, with debts discharged just two weeks before his death.
  • Police have interviewed over 5,000 people; family and friends offered a £25,000 reward, but no one has been charged despite multiple reviews.
  • Billy Blue, Alexander’s brother (now 67, from Robroyston, Glasgow), claims police found seven partial DNA matches during a 2015 review (13th anniversary) using new technology, but allegedly halted the probe; he believes three men carried out the attack and knows who ordered the “hit”.
  • Billy Blue recently slammed police and Crown Office as an “absolute disgrace” for no charges after 23 years, demanding justice before the 25-year anniversary in 2027; he met Lord Advocate Dorothy Bain KC and feels family treated like “garbage”.
  • Retired Detective Chief Inspector David Swindle, who led the probe, described it as a complex case with various motives, reviewed multiple times, and hopes someone has information.
  • Police Scotland’s DCI Brian Geddes (Homicide Governance Review) states the case remains under active review with Crown Office, no cases closed, using advancing forensic technologies; they acknowledge family distress.
  • Crown Office spokesman: committed to reviewing unresolved homicides with Police Scotland, keeping family updated on developments.
  • Theories include house-buying scam, financial troubles (complex background, diary note for meeting with “D Hobbs” or “D Robertson” on day of death), possible hit worth more dead than alive, drugs laundering (unlikely), or homosexuality-related (unlikely).
  • Billy Blue driven by mother Kathy’s (now 89+) grief: “She’s never got over that”; Scottish Conservative shadow minister Russell Findlay urges full effort, notes links to powerful individuals.

Glasgow (Cardiff Daily) February 23, 2026 – Evidence in the unsolved murder of Glasgow businessman Alexander Blue is under review by Police Scotland, as his brother Billy Blue criticises authorities for 23 years without charges, calling it an “absolute disgrace”.

Who Was Alexander Blue?

Alexander Blue, aged 41 at the time of his death, was a seemingly successful car salesman and part-owner of The Taxi Centre, a company selling vehicles to the private hire taxi trade with an annual turnover reportedly reaching £7 million. He resided in a luxury Georgian-style ground-floor flat on Dundonald Road in the affluent Dowanhill area of Glasgow’s West End. As reported by Chris Green of The Independent, Blue had been declared bankrupt in 1999, but his debts were discharged only two weeks prior to the attack, amid a complex financial background that detectives suggested could hold the key to the case.

In the days before his murder, Blue confided in friends about buying a new house, planning to view it the day after the attack, fuelling one theory of a house-buying scam. He was last seen alive around 8pm on 24 June 2002, leaving the Bean Scene cafe in Byres Road after drinking a cappuccino alone.

What Happened on the Night of the Murder?

Blue parked his silver Porsche outside his home around half a mile from the cafe, where he was believed to have been attacked immediately. Witnesses reported key details: a sighting of him with three men in Ashton Lane at 10pm, two men in a black BMW nearby at 10:45pm, a voice speaking to him outside at 11:30pm, and a man leaving the house. A neighbour heard at least two men arguing inside the flat that evening and found Blue unconscious in his driveway at 12:20am on 25 June, beaten savagely, stabbed, and in a pool of blood.

He suffered horrific head and facial injuries, never regained consciousness, and died two days later in Southern General Hospital. Notably, Blue carried a briefcase with £30,000, neither of which has been recovered; his diary mentioned a meeting that day with “D Hobbs” (possibly “D Robertson”).

Why Is Evidence Being Reviewed Now?

As detailed in a Press Association report via upday News, evidence around the case is undergoing review by Police Scotland’s Homicide Governance and Review team, working with Scottish Police Authority Forensic Services on advancing technologies. This follows repeated examinations, including a 2015 review where Billy Blue claims seven partial DNA matches were identified from the scene.

Billy Blue, 67, told the Press Association: “It’s been known for a considerable length of time who’s responsible for Alec’s murder. I would like to see them brought to justice, it would be a vindication.” He described it as “no ordinary murder” and believes three men executed it. The review comes as the case nears its 24th anniversary, with Billy demanding action before 25 years in 2027.

What Does Billy Blue Say About the Investigation?

Billy Blue, Alexander’s older brother from Robroyston, has campaigned for justice for over two decades. In 2022, as reported by Chris Green of The Independent, he revealed police shared DNA findings during a 13th-anniversary meeting but allegedly “pulled the plug”; he holds hope for his 89-year-old mother Kathy. Recently, to upday News via Press Association, Billy slammed: “How bad does it have to get before you get an outside force in? You have to get justice, you can’t let people kill people and just get away with it.” He added: “Police and the Crown Office should hang their heads in shame if nobody’s been charged by the 25-year anniversary… We’ve been brushed off and treated like garbage.”

Billy stated: “What was horrendous was my mother lost her son, and that’s always been my driving force. She’s never got over that. She’ll never get over what happened that day.” He recently met Lord Advocate Dorothy Bain KC.

What Do Police and Officials Respond?

Retired Detective Chief Inspector David Swindle, who led the initial probe involving dozens of officers and 5,000 interviews, told The Independent: “The murder of Alex Blue in Glasgow 20 years ago was a very complex case with various potential motives… reviewed on numerous occasions and to date sadly remains unresolved. I live in hope that the truth will come out… someone out there without doubt must have information.”

DCI Brian Geddes of Police Scotland’s Homicide Governance Review said: “We acknowledge the heartache and distress that the Blue family have suffered… Police Scotland never considers cases closed and the passage of time is no barrier… We meet regularly with the Crown Office… Where appropriate, we will continue to update the families.” A Police Scotland spokesperson reiterated: “There is no barrier over the passage of time to the investigation of unresolved homicide cases.”

Crown Office spokesman: “The Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service recognise the suffering of families… The murder of Alexander Blue remains an unresolved homicide and we are absolutely committed to reviewing such cases along with Police Scotland… keeping the Blue family informed of significant developments.”

What Theories Surround the Case?

Detectives in 2005 told Grampian TV’s Unsolved series the key might lie in Blue’s financial complexities. Theories include: a contract hit (Billy Blue claims he knows the orderer, worth more dead than alive, £30,000 price); house-buying scam; drugs money laundering via taxis (unlikely); or a homosexuality-related encounter (unlikely). Scottish Conservative shadow minister Russell Findlay noted to The Independent: “There are serious question marks… unexplained links to some powerful and high-profile individuals.”

A £25,000 reward was offered by family and friends.

Will the Case Ever Be Solved?

Billy Blue remains optimistic, telling Reddit UnsolvedMurders discussions via reports: “All the evidence, DNA and forensics are being re-examined with all the latest technology. As technology evolves, we gain confidence that Alex’s killer will be caught.” Police emphasise ongoing reviews with forensic advances. The family endures, driven by grief, as Scotland pledges no cold case is forgotten.
