Cardiff (Cardiff Daily) August 4, 2026 – A trackside fire near Marshfield has led to significant disruption across rail services in south-east Wales, with passengers warned to expect cancellations, long delays and limited replacement travel options.

What happened in Marshfield?

As reported by the South Wales Argus, the disruption began after a lineside fire in the Marshfield area between Cardiff Central and Newport. Transport for Wales said the incident has reduced the number of services able to run and left passengers facing substantial knock-on delays across the network.

A spokesperson for Transport for Wales said:

“Following a lineside fire in the Marshfield area between Cardiff Central and Newport. Fewer services are able to run, but residual delays of around 60 minutes are to be expected. We apologise for the disruption caused to your journey”.

Which rail services are affected?

The main impact is on the Cardiff Central to Newport corridor, where services are cancelled in both directions until 12am on Wednesday, August 5. Services between Newport and Gloucester are also cancelled in both directions following the same incident.

The disruption means passengers on several key routes may need to change plans, as the fire has affected a busy stretch of the rail network used by commuters, intercity travellers and local passengers alike.

What alternative travel is available?

Transport for Wales said alternative travel options have been made available to help passengers complete their journeys. Customers can use tickets on Great Western Railway services between Swansea and Cardiff Central, and between Cardiff Central and Cheltenham Spa via Bristol, in both directions. CrossCountry services between Cardiff Central and Cheltenham Spa are also accepting rail tickets.

Passengers starting their journey from a different station because of the disruption may use their existing ticket to return to their original departure point at no extra cost. However, officials have warned that road transport provision is “extremely limited”, and passengers are being advised to delay travel unless it is essential.

Which bus routes are accepting rail tickets?

A number of bus routes operated by Stagecoach South Wales are currently accepting rail tickets, including the X24 between Newport and Pontypool via Cwmbran, the 21 and X3 between Pontypool and Cwmbran, and the 23 between Cwmbran and Hereford via Abergavenny. The X3 is also running between Cardiff, Pontypool and Cwmbran, while the 11 is operating between Cwmbran and Pontypool.

Cardiff Bus is accepting rail tickets on the 30 service between Cardiff and Newport, while Newport Bus is accepting tickets on the X30 between Newport and Cardiff. Newport Bus services Route 73 and X74 between Newport and Chepstow are also available, along with Route 72 between Chepstow and Lydney.

What advice have officials given passengers?

Transport for Wales has urged passengers to check before they travel because services remain heavily disrupted and delays are expected even where trains are running. With cancellation levels high and replacement road transport limited, the advice is to postpone non-essential journeys where possible.

The message from rail operators is that the disruption may continue to affect journeys well beyond the immediate area of the fire, as the knock-on impact spreads across connected routes.

Why does this matter for passengers?

For commuters, the disruption may mean missed connections, longer journey times and a need to switch to bus services or alternative rail routes. For those travelling for work, appointments or airport connections, the uncertainty over delays and cancellations could make travel difficult throughout the morning and into the night.

The affected route is an important link between Cardiff, Newport and surrounding areas, so even a short-lived incident can affect a large number of passengers.

What is the background to this development?

Trackside and lineside fires can have an immediate impact on rail safety because they may affect signalling, overhead equipment or the safe movement of trains near the affected section. On busy routes, operators often need to reduce services or suspend them completely while checks are carried out and the line is made safe.

In this case, the Marshfield incident has caused a wider travel problem because the affected stretch sits on a key route between south Wales destinations and onward connections towards Gloucestershire and the west of England. That makes even a local fire capable of creating regional disruption.

What is the likely prediction for passengers?

If the disruption continues for much of the day, passengers travelling through the Cardiff Central, Newport and Gloucester corridors are likely to face delayed or altered journeys, particularly during peak travel periods. Those who depend on rail for commuting or scheduled travel may need to use the replacement bus options, but limited road transport means overcrowding or slower journeys may follow.

For the wider travelling public, the immediate effect is likely to be caution around non-essential travel until services return to normal and the line is fully recovered.
