The decline was gradual rather than immediate.
Coal faced competition from oil and other fuels. Oil became increasingly important as a maritime fuel after the First World War. Cardiff’s dependence on coal exports therefore became a structural weakness.

Steel lasted longer. East Moors Works continued operating until 1978. Its closure removed another major heavy-industrial presence from the city.
